“As part of the major project of advanced regionalization, Morocco has opted for development agencies at the regional level, including the Marchica agency, Bouregreg or the Tanger Med agency”remarked the CEO of Marchica Med.

Initiated by King Mohammed VI in 2008, the Marchica lagoon site development project aims to enhance the natural wealth of the Nador region, through the construction of seven thematic towns around the lagoon for an amount estimated at 26 billion dirhams (more than 2 billion euros).

The first phase of the project consisted of depolluting the Marchica lagoon, which required an investment of around 1.5 billion dirhams, according to the Marchica Agency website.

The depollution work aimed to have a social impact by mobilizing a local workforce, now initiated into environmental trades. The opening of a pass one kilometer long and 300 meters wide allowed the healing, the purification of the marine environment and thus the restoration of the marine ecosystem and the return of migratory birds.
