Partial halt to construction of the athletics facility of the Freinberg diocese

After the excitement regarding illegally cleared trees and the construction of an unauthorized sheet piling, the athletics facility at Freinberg is now providing further material for discussion.

For example, slag was used during the construction work for the foundation – but according to the building permit issued by the city, this is not permitted for reasons of water rights. That is why the building and district administration of the city of Linz ordered a partial construction freeze yesterday, Monday.

Further administrative penal proceedings

Before construction can continue on the affected area, an expert opinion is obtained from an external institute to determine whether the slag contains pollutants and whether the groundwater might be affected, says Eva Schobesberger (Greens), city councilor responsible for nature conservation law and water law. “During the construction of the athletics facility, the diocese has repeatedly violated the applicable building permit and the permit under nature conservation law,” Schobesberger criticizes the sloppy treatment of nature.

Administrative penal proceedings were initiated because of the use of slag, but it is not the only one because of the other violations.

Lorenz Potocnik (Linz+) is pleased that the authorities and Schobesberger, as the responsible city councillor, reacted so quickly that he had already criticized the use of the slag last week. “When it comes to slag, opinions differ as to whether it is toxic or not. Essentially, it depends on the slag and how it is processed. However, I am very shocked by its use in the middle of grassland. So far I only knew it on the streets – and track construction.”
