Parthenon sculptures: “The way the British Museum rents out its premises is offensive” says the director of the Acropolis museum – 2024-03-06 17:20:21

Nikos Stampolidis, however, appears optimistic regarding their return: “Because the British Museum is in need of 1 billion pounds at the moment. So he’s looking to rent out his premises in a way that I find offensive. I’ll tell you why. When I see the people, I was not there, but I see the images, turning their backs on aesthetics, this is already provoking. I wouldn’t do it,” emphasized Mr. Stampolidis.

When asked by Giorgos Kouvaras if he is optimistic regarding the case of the Parthenon Sculptures, he answered “I have said and I repeat it: if I was not optimistic, I would not be here. If I amputate your limbs and your torso remains therefore it is barbarism. In the best museum in the world, you want to take them to the Metropolitan, you want to take them to Australia, wherever you want to go, with the best led lights to light them, they will never have the experiential part of the seasons of light, with full moon, no moon night, with morning, with followingnoon, with the smells that each time has a different season[…]».
