Israel’s right-wing religious government is making further progress with its plans to weaken the judiciary: the judiciary committee in parliament approved a controversial draft law on Thursday night, which MPs can then vote on in a few days. The law is part of the controversial judicial reform and, according to the media, might come into force as early as Monday or Tuesday.
According to the plans, the highest court should no longer be able to judge decisions by the government or individual ministers as “inappropriate”. At the beginning of the year, the judges classified the appointment of Shas party leader Arie Deri as interior minister because of his criminal past as “inappropriate”. As a result, Netanyahu had to fire his confidante. Observers expect that the coalition wants to reverse this with the new law. Critics also fear that opponents of government policy in key positions might be arbitrarily dismissed.
On Tuesday, following days of deliberations, the Judiciary Committee began voting on several thousand reservations from the opposition. He rejected them all. According to the media, turbulent scenes took place during the approval of the draft law, opposition MPs interrupted the session and took away microphones from the committee. They also accuse the body of making mistakes in the legislative process, which was carried out very hastily.
