This Thursday an interesting meteorological situation occurred in Cuba, according to the report of renowned meteorologist José Rubiera.

A cold front has stationed itself from Yucatán to the northern coast of Cuba and the Bahamas, a phenomenon that is not unusual in the month of October. Rubiera explained that “this front has brought cloudiness, and as is common, behind it there is a strong anticyclone.”

The interaction between the cold air of the Gulf of Mexico and the warm waters of the region generated northeasterly winds that reached speeds of between 30 and 35 km/h, with gusts that reached up to 45 km/h.

This caused storm surges on the northern coast of western Cuba, where waves between 1.5 and 2 meters high were anticipated. “The combination of these atmospheric factors generates conditions prone to storm surges, which could affect sailors,” the expert warned.

In southern Cuba, a broad area of low pressure has been active for several days, bringing with it isolated showers, rains and thunderstorms. Rubiera points out that “the humid air from the southeast and south combines with this situation, intensifying precipitation.”

The weather in Cuba this Friday, October 18, 2024

This trend will continue through Friday, although the probabilities of tropical development of the low pressure system are expected to be low. “The system will move westward, crossing Central America, and its most important factor will be the contribution of rain,” he added.

Yesterday rains were recorded in almost the entire country, especially in the west and center. For this Friday, a cloudy day with showers and thunderstorms is forecast, especially in the morning in these regions.

In the east of the country, the conditions will be different; Less cloudiness and more sun is expected in the morning, although in the afternoon the situation will change with an increase in cloudiness and the possibility of showers.

Temperatures will remain moderate, reaching maximums of 28 to 30 degrees Celsius in the west and center, while in the east they could reach up to 32 or 34 degrees. The minimum temperatures will range between 21 and 24 degrees. Winds will remain from the northeast, with speeds of 10 to 25 km/h, but could increase to 35 km/h on the north western coast, with gusts reaching 40 to 45 km/h.

Looking ahead to the next few days, Rubiera indicates that on Saturday there could still be cloudiness and rain in the west and center of the country, as well as in the east, although these conditions are expected to decrease for Sunday and Monday.
