Parliament House: A plan to catch rats snooping on files and camera wires

Pakistan Of Parliament Rats are in the news again in recent times, but not because of any legislation, but because of rat damage to Parliament House property.

Taking notice of this, the concerned authorities have also written a letter to the concerned institution requesting to control these rats.

According to government officials working in Parliament, the issue of presence of rats in Parliament is not new but it is about 40 years old.

A member of parliament told The Independent that he has been seeing rats running around the parliament for the past 38 years. Not only this, but his residence in the parliament is a cover under the cafeteria and a huge kitchen. Although the cafeteria space is not in use.’

He said, ‘By walking around this parliament, you will know that there is a water fountain here and due to the old ceiling, rats are also there. Rats are rats, they get everywhere.’

The official said that the rats have also cut the wires of the CCTV cameras installed in the parliament. Rats come down from the ceiling and tear files, including records and computer wires. And mice also spread communicable diseases.’

In this regard, National Assembly spokesperson Zafar Sultan told the Independent that since the maintenance of Parliament is the responsibility of Capital Development Authority (CDA), Speaker National Assembly Ayaz Sadiq has written a letter to the institution taking notice of this matter.

After which CDA has tendered about 12 lakh rupees for one year. Two officials attached to a company will catch rats in the parliament using drugs, cages or traps.’

According to the spokesman: ‘About five years ago, a similar measure was taken to catch rats, after which the number of rats decreased by about 90%.’

He said that there are underground electricity, fire alarm and CCTV wires in Parliament which are cut by rats.

Two cameras have been damaged due to the wires being cut. As Parliament is being monitored, the cameras have been repaired immediately after they were found to be faulty.’

Spokesperson of the National Assembly while talking about this matter said ‘so that such a situation does not happen in the future, therefore a tender has been made for the elimination of rats.’

This matter came to the fore when it was revealed in a meeting of the Parliament’s Housing and Library Committee last month that ‘when the rooms in the Parliament were turned to take some documents, rats had cut several papers.’

The spokesman has said that ‘the process of eliminating rats will be started in late August or early September.’
