A new fire was reported in the South African National Assembly building in Cape Town, authorities confirmed, on Monday followingnoon. This is the second fire in two days.
“Devastating. Painful. Inexplicable. A new fire has just broken out on the roof of the National Assembly building. The firefighter reinforcement teams are on their way. The battle will be won,” said the spokesperson for the South Parliament -African, Moloto Mothapo, on Twitter with a video showing the roof of the building in flames.
Mothapo said firefighters have been battling a first fire that broke out on Sunday for nearly two days.
The interior of the National Assembly building was devastated by flames on Sunday, with a plume of dark smoke visible in footage released to local media.
The fire destroyed the third floor of the old assembly building, which included offices and a gymnasium.
Live video footage shown on local television on Monday showed firefighters trying to put out rooftop flames from the air.
Police announced on Sunday that they had arrested a 49-year-old suspect in connection with the fire. The concerned is expected to appear in court on Tuesday. He faces charges of burglary and theft as well as arson.
