Parking lot under construction falls in Boston; die man

Several levels of a parking garage under construction in downtown Boston collapsed Saturday followingnoon, killing a worker, authorities said.

Boston Emergency Medical Services confirmed that one person died and another was taken to an area hospital, WCVB-TV reported.

Several levels collapsed in the Government Center parking lot due to a falling crane on parts that were under construction, crews at the scene told the station.

Boston Fire Commissioner Jack Dempsey said a demolition worker on a construction vehicle fell into the parking lot when the structure collapsed, falling from a considerable height.

The worker was found under a pile of debris and was pronounced dead at the scene by authorities, Dempsey added.

The commissioner explained that the worker’s body has not been recovered at this time because firefighters must wait for the Boston Inspection Services department to determine that it is safe to enter the area.

Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden told WCVB-TV the deceased was a young man but declined to identify him.
