French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said 25,000 police officers will be deployed every day in Paris and other cities during the Paralympics, in line with security measures implemented during the Olympics.
The Paralympics will take place between August 28 and September 8 in the French capital and other surrounding areas.
At a press conference, the minister reiterated that the authorities have not detected any “tangible” threat of terrorism for the Paralympians.
He said the delegation of 27 Israeli athletes would receive 24-hour protection from elite officials, as at the Olympics, due to tension over Palestinian deaths during the war in Gaza and threats of conflict in the Middle East.
The opening ceremony is expected to attract around 30,000 spectators at the Concorde and another 15,000 will watch the event for free from the Champs-Elysees, Darmanin said.
Police forces will also be providing security for the torch relay, and the flame is expected to arrive in France on Sunday from Stoke Mandeville, a town northwest of London that is widely regarded as the birthplace of the Paralympics.—AP
