Electric scooters soon unavailable
Electric scooters, loved by some and dreaded by others, are going into early retirement. Following a citizen consultation vote, more than 100,000 Parisians voted 89% once morest the renewal of the scooter operators’ contract with the municipality. Despite the abstention of a large part of the voters, the mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, decided to follow this decision.
Thus, from September 1, 2023, these machines will no longer be available for self-service. This decision follows numerous complaints regarding the lack of civility in the use and parking of these scooters. Placed in the middle of the sidewalk or the roadway, burning red lights, jostling pedestrians, they had become synonymous with road safety.
Alternatives and urban mobility in Paris
With the demise of scooters, other micromobility solutions are gaining popularity. Self-service e-bikes, offered by the same operators as scooters, are a viable option. Their cost is around 1 euro for unblocking and 0.25 euro per minute. In addition, the Vélib, the Parisian self-service bicycle, remains an affordable and efficient option, despite some criticism. Certainly, the malfunctions are numerous, but you will find one that works to replace your old usual means of transport. Self-service electric scooters, such as Cityscoot, also offer an alternative for urban commuting. Finally, for those who prefer to own their means of transport, the personal scooter remains an option, as does the personal bicycle.
The end of self-service electric scooters does not mean the end of mobility innovation in Paris. The city continues to invest in infrastructure for bicycles, with the aim of extending cycle paths. In addition, the Grand Paris Express project aims to improve connections with the suburbs. Walking also remains an effective solution for short journeys, while offering health benefits.
