American reality actress Paris Hilton is once once more setting a bad example. While the emergency services on the Hawaiian island of Maui continued to search for more than 1,000 missing people following the fires last week, the 42-year-old was having fun a few kilometers away with husband Carter Reum and son Phoenix on the beach.
Hilton landed on Maui last Tuesday, the day the Lahaina wildfire broke out. The clouds of smoke in the west and interior of the island are said not to have spoiled their holiday joy. The hotel heiress also ignored the tourist office’s request for all visitors to leave Maui for the “rescue and salvage mission” during her stay in Wailea.
The American presenter Oprah Winfrey, who has lived in a holiday home on Maui for more than 15 years, might not be evicted, nor might Hilton. Her attempt to speak to Hawaiians who had lost their homes in one of the emergency shelters failed because of a camera ban. Oprah, as the presenter and producer is called in the USA, exchanged views with several families regarding their escape from the flames without a team. In addition, the 69-year-old billionaire had diapers, toiletries and bed linen brought to emergency shelters.
After the flames spread across Maui in strong wind gusts and drought in the past week, Hawaii’s Gov. Josh Green confirmed at least 99 deaths on Monday. With dogs, the emergency services in the rubble of the city of Lahaina continued to search for missing people. “The death toll might double in the next ten days,” the governor warned. As Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen said, the dogs trained to find cadavers might only search for 15 minutes before having to rest.

Meanwhile, former wrestler and actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who grew up in Hawaii, thanked firefighters, doctors and nurses. “All residents of the island, please stay strong during this difficult time. Resilience is in our nature,” Johnson wrote on Instagram on Monday.
