The spread of bed bugs in public places in Paris sparked a state of panic on the French street, as the blood-sucking insects were spotted in the Paris metro, high-speed trains, and Charles de Gaulle Airport, in addition to hospitals, some cinemas and hotels in the French capital, and many French people shared pictures and videos of the insects on Facebook. Social media.
Bed bugs are small, brown insects between 4 and 7 mm in size that suck the blood of humans and animals but do not transmit diseases, according to the French Environmental Protection Agency.
The political debate intensified following the municipality of Paris called on the government to develop a plan to combat the spread of these insects in a letter addressed to the French Prime Minister.
Mathilde Panot, head of the “Proud France” bloc, called on the French government to take quick action in a session of Parliament, and explained: “We want the government to recognize the matter as a public health problem.”
She added: “They should stop asking people to deal with the problem themselves, as if it were an individual problem, while companies charge exorbitant prices to spray them with chemical pesticides.”
The French High Authority for Health estimated that between 2017 and 2022, 11% of French families suffered from bed bugs.
