Paris 2024: Venezuela’s participation in the Olympic Games on August 1

  • The Venezuelan swimmer closed his participation by being left out of the final by just seconds of difference

On Thursday, August 1, Venezuelan swimmer Alberto Mestre participated in the 50-meter freestyle category at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The Venezuelan placed sixth in his series with a time of 22.02. His result did not allow him to qualify for the final of the competition.

Overall, Mestre placed 21st out of 73 competitors, thus bidding farewell to his second participation in an Olympic event.

“I swim because I love swimming, but I compete because I am proud to be able to represent my country, my flag. Tomorrow (today) I will have the tricolor on my cap and with each stroke I will be remembering my land. Strength Venezuela, strength,” wrote the Venezuelan on his Instagram account hours before the competition.

Mestre had to finish among the top 18 places in the competition to be able to advance to the final and compete for a medal.

The Creole competed in another category (100-meter freestyle) and finished in 37th position out of 79, after achieving a time of 49.51, with which he finished in fourth place in heat 6.

Alfonso Maestre, who also represented Venezuela in Paris, was unable to qualify for the 400 and 800 meter swimming events.

In total, 33 athletes are representing Venezuela in the Olympic competition in 11 sports: athletics, boxing, cycling, water sports, equestrian, fencing, judo, weightlifting, wrestling, taekwondo and shooting.
