Belgian boxer Oshin Derieuw was unable to do anything in the quarter-finals of the -66 kg boxing match at the 2024 Olympic Games against China’s Yang Liu, who won all three rounds. Derieuw’s hopes of a medal are therefore dashed.
Qualified for the quarter-finals after her victory against the Cape Verdean Ivanusa Moreira by decision of the judges, the Belgian Oshin Derieuwseeded number 7, faced the Chinese this Saturday Yang Liuseeded number 2. The stakes were twofold since there was not only a qualification for the semi-finals to go for but the assurance of a medal since, in boxing, the two defeated semi-finalists receive a bronze medal.
Not afraid of anything, the Belgian boxer still lost the first round, on the advice of four of the five judges. In the second round, the situation got worse since Derieuw did not convince a single judge. Unfortunately, she was unable to reverse the trend and bowed out with honours after convincing two judges in the last round. The Belgian will therefore not have a medal.
“I did what I could, I hit a few shots. But anyway, she’s better, she’s the reigning world champion.“, reacted Derieuw after his last performance at the Arena Paris Nord. “I’m not disappointed, I managed to play a good match, I didn’t make things easy for him“.
