The Romanian Ana Barbosu recovered the bronze medal in the floor gymnastics event at the Paris Olympics, after partially winning his case on Saturday at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
The 18-year-old gymnast had initially been announced third on Tuesday, even waving the Romanian flag in the Arena Bercy before being demoted to fourth position after the judges upgraded the American’s score. Jordan Chiles.
But Chiles’ appeal had reached the jury.”one minute and four seconds“after the announcement of his score, while the regulations of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) provide for a one-minute time limit, the CAS ruled on Saturday, seized by Barbosu.
The supreme court of the sporting world has therefore restored the American’s initial score (13.666), while Ana Barbosu had obtained 13.700.
His compatriot Sabrina Voinea (13.700 also but a lower execution score), who contested his penalty (-0.1) to return to the podium, was however dismissed.
As a result, in the evening, the FIG returned the bronze medal to Ana Barbosu.
“It’s a feeling I can barely express, I can’t believe it“, reacted Barbosu, quoted by the Romanian media. When I heard the news, I was afraid it wasn’t true, and once I was sure, I hugged my parents and called everyone who had helped me.“.
The Brazilian gymnast Rebecca Andrade was crowned Olympic floor champion on August 5, beating American superstar Simone Biles.
One of the most memorable images of the Games shows Biles and Chiles, who thought she would finish third, bowing to a beaming Andrade on the top step of the podium.
