The Torch Relay is an unmissable tradition that takes us back to the roots of the Games. The first torch of the Paris 2024 Olympic Torch Relay will be lit on April 16, 2024, according to ancient tradition, using the sun’s rays, during a ceremony in the sanctuary of Olympia, Greece, where the ancient Games took place.

From the Peloponnese, the Olympic Flame will travel to Athens to board the Belem and cross the Mediterranean Sea. She will arrive in Marseille on May 8 and begin her epic journey in France.

The Olympic flame will cross the Var on May 10

For one day, 100 porters will take turns throughout the department.

It will pass through Saint-Raphaël, Hyères-les-Palmiers, Brignoles, Flassans-sur-Issole, La Seyne-sur-Mer, Les Salles-sur-Verdon, La Garde to finish its course on the Place de la Liberté in Toulon.

Torch Relay Safety

In accordance with the announcements of the Minister of the Interior, a security bubble will be set up around the torchbearers with guardians of the Flame. Made up of police officers and gendarmes (national staff) trained specifically for this mission, it will accompany the Relay throughout its journey in France.

Locally, the State services are responsible for organizing, in conjunction with the municipalities concerned, the security of the route, on the edge of the roads crossed and closed to traffic during the passage, from the starting point of each stage , to its point of arrival. This is a system similar to what can be done for the Tour de France.

Will thus be mobilized:

– 375 Var police officers and gendarmes (excluding CRS Republican Security Companies and mobile gendarmes assigned as reinforcements), including 120 in Toulon;

– the municipal police officers of the towns crossed, in close collaboration with the national security forces. For this exceptional event and to ensure security everywhere, including in the rural municipalities crossed by the Flame, the municipal police will be authorized by the prefect to secure events outside the municipal territory alone.

To ensure the security of the route and all the events organized during this day in connection with the Relay, in addition to local personnel, the reinforcement of mobile force units was requested to allow the continued presence of internal security forces on the entire route and places where people gather.

Impact for residents near the Olympic Torch Relay:

1- as for the Tour de France, closure of the roads used at least 1 hour before the passage of the Torch Relay;

2- ban on parking of vehicles along the route.

In addition to the information relayed soon by state services, a communication campaign will be launched by each municipality crossed. Residents are invited to follow the recommendations sent by their municipality in the coming days.
