Paris 2024: Half of the Place de la Concorde will no longer be accessible to cars after the Olympics

After the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, half of the Place de la Concorde will no longer be accessible to motorists. The space will be redeveloped to be dedicated to walking, just like the Trocadéro and the Champ-de-Mars.

The Post-Olympic urban transformation in Paris is looking radical according to statements by Mayor Anne Hidalgo last January. After the 2024 Olympics, the half of the Place de la Concorde”will not be returned to motoristsmarking a major step in the mayor’s strategy for reduce the presence of the car in the capital. The largest square in the city will be dedicated to the walkoffering Parisians and visitors a pedestrian space from the Tuileries to the obelisk.

In the Sunday TribuneAnne Hidalgo emphasizes that this decision will contribute to smoother traffic flow, stating that “the place given to the car in this emblematic place will have been only a parenthesis in History“. With this transformation, “the Place de la Concorde, the Trocadéro and Iéna (…) the Champ-de-Mars constitute 50 hectares of pedestrian and planted spaces for walking”, accompanied by “60 km of additional cycle paths“These changes are part of the mayor’s desire to promote sustainable modes of transport and to create green spaces accessible to all.

Despite the temporary constraints for Parisians, the installation of the Olympic sites has been a great success, bringing together local residents and tourists around the most beautiful squares in the capital.
