The Federation of Performing Artists (SFA-CGT) has submitted a strike notice for the opening day of the Paris Olympics on July 26. They protested “unequal treatment” among artists recruited for the exhibition. In the same press release, the union also announced a strike once morest rehearsals for the Paralympic opening ceremony on August 28. According to the union, the producers of the Paname24 ceremony did not respect the arts and culture company’s collective agreement.
Disgraceful working conditions
A member of the SFA reported to AFP that of the 3,000 intermittent dancers recruited, 250 to 300 were employed under “disgraceful” conditions, without remuneration and without knowing the amount of the rights transferred. . Salaries range from €60 for intermittent workers in the entertainment industry to €1,610 for employees who benefit from collective bargaining: a wide range that exacerbates deep inequalities. Unions also criticized this differential treatment: the fact that certain non-Parisian artists were paid and accommodated while most artists (often the most precarious) were not. Although two talks were held in early July, no significant progress was made.
“Some people lose money working”
The Paris 2024 organizing committee confirmed that they “take the issue of working conditions very seriously” and that Paname24 respects dancers’ collective agreements: fees can even be higher than traditional minimum fees. “After verification, we noticed that our service provider Paname 24 strictly complied with the law and applied the collective agreement applicable to the profession of dancers,” a representative of the organizers added.
Bernard Thibault, chairman of the Paris 2024 Social Charter Commission, warned of the situation on June 10. “We tell them this is a real career opportunity, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be recognized for the work we do. Some people are going to lose money because of the opening,” he said.
