On June 9, the day following their son’s funeral, the parents of Esekia, a severely handicapped 11-year-old boy, were arrested by the police. Initially placed under an arrest warrant for deprivation of care having led to death without the intention of giving it, the council chamber had finally decided to reclassify the facts as murder. The Mons prosecutor’s office confirms that the father, Gilles V., has appealed this decision.
“The decision of the chamber of bets has not yet been taken”, specifies Damien Verheyen, deputy public prosecutor of Mons. “At present, the hearings of the doctors and nursing staff who took care of the young boy in the specialized center he attended are in progress. The medical file has been entered and the investigating judge is awaiting the results. of the toxicological analysis and the conclusions of the autopsy.”
As a reminder, on May 30 at Clos des Chardonnerets, in Frameries, Esekia’s dad had discovered the latter dead in his bed. The death was quickly considered suspicious and an investigation was launched. “The parents have been placed under an arrest warrant for deprivation of care resulting in death”, then indicated the deputy. “The death was qualified as suspicious. The file was therefore put under investigation to shed light on file.”
The autopsy had notably revealed that Esekia’s stomach was empty, meaning that he had not been fed all day. He only weighed more than fifteen kilos. The five brothers and sisters of Esekia had been entrusted to the family. The investigation is far from complete since it must still establish whether or not the necessary care has been provided. One of the little victim’s sisters, in her twenties and from a previous union, disputes the murder thesis and explains the death of her little brother – as well as his low weight – by disease.
On the side of the mother, Marjorie B., the thesis of the murder is also disputed. His lawyer, Me Jeremie Berger, intends to incriminate the dad for the possible lack of care given to the child. However, it is still far too early to comment on the outcome of this tragic case, the investigation was not yet completed and a court decision is not expected immediately.
