Paraná will host the third edition of the International Cassava Fair (Fiman)

A meeting to accelerate business related to cassava will bring together businesspeople, exporters and industrialists in Paranavaí (PR) between the 21st and 23rd of November. It is the third edition of the International Cassava Fair (Fiman), which returns to the agenda for the first time following the pandemic.

Five years following the last edition, expectations are high: following the market growth trend, the 2023 edition of the International Cassava Fair is expected to attract more than five thousand people including industrialists, producers, suppliers, consumers and retailers.

The innovations of recent years explain why the scenario is optimistic: cassava culture has evolved and placed Paraná as the main producer of the root for industrial purposes in Brazil. Adding industrial cassava and table cassava, the Gross Production Value (VBP) in 2022 was R$3.1 billion. Among the innovations in the regional industry, products such as breadmaking flour and modified starches for various lines stand out.

Demand on the rise

The demand for cassava root continues to rise in the country. According to the Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Research (Cepea), despite the limited supply for industries – caused by lower availability in the field and the retraction of part of the producers – prices remained firm between July and August 2023. The average weekly value at the beginning of August was R$706.10 per ton. The data was released in Cepea’s monthly report.

The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) estimates that this year the national harvest will be around 18.4 million tons, harvested from the 1.24 million hectares planted. Currently, the state that produces the most root is Pará, followed by Paraná and Bahia.

Na safra 2022/2023, Paraná planted 126.4 thousand hectares of industrial cassava that yielded 2.9 million tons

Global thinking

The export potential is another relevant point for the organizers of Finam 2023, which expects many international delegations. In the 2018 edition, the event received representatives from Guinea, Sierra Leone, Luanda, Thailand, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Colombia, Ghana, United States, South Africa, Paraguay, Senegal, Nicaragua, among others. “We hope to have an even larger audience, more voluminous deals, more commercial transactions between exporting companies and the public that goes to the event”, highlights Maurício Gehlen, president of the Deliberative Council of the Commercial and Business Association of Paranavaí (ACIAP), organizer of the event .

According to Cepea, in 2022 Brazil exported 43.6 thousand tons of cassava starch, 6% more than the volume traded with other countries in 2021. Finam 2023 already has confirmed international exhibitors, including Bosida, Sino Food Machinery and Bah Souley.

Challenges and opportunities

To become the largest national producer of industrial cassava, Paraná has invested in improving planting and cultivation processes, with selected stems, better soil preparation and fertilization. The harvesting process, however, is still done manually by most producers. Mechanizing the activity and investing in genetics and research are some of the sector’s priorities – not only in the state, but across the country.

With these innovations, the country can reach higher positions in the ranking of major cassava starch exporters. Currently, the biggest buyers are the United States and Paraguay, which in 2022 accounted for 35.9% and 32.9% of purchases, respectively.

Finam should generate millions in business

In 2018, around R$180 million in business was carried out. In addition to the international exhibitors, several Brazilian brands are confirmed in this edition: Amidos Bankhardt, Grupo Fankote, Podium, Unimake, Fino Alimentos, Trans Scalcon, Secamaq, Ademicon Paranavaí, Top Limpeza, Central Mesch, Trevisan, Veneza Máquinas and Paranavaí Máquinas.

Fiman is an achievement of ACIAP in partnership with the Rural Society of Northwest Paraná, Rural Union of Paranavaí, Cassava Technological Center (CETEM), Paranavaí City Hall, Brazilian Association of Cassava Starch Producers (ABAM) and Industries Union of Cassava from Paraná (SIMP).
