Paramount cancels Halo series after two seasons

Paramount cancels Halo series after two seasons

Since Microsoft announced the Halo series back in 2013, fans of the saga and video games in general had high expectations of finally being able to see the Master Chief in a high-budget live-action. However, it was not until March 2022 that the series finally premiered exclusively on the Paramount + streaming service.

Now, following two seasons, Paramount has made the decision to cancel the series.

This information comes from THRbut the reason why it has been cancelled is unclear. Despite the cancellation, Amblin Television, Xbox and 343 Industries hope to find a new partner to continue the series.

A Paramount+ spokesperson said in a statement: “We are incredibly proud of this ambitious series and would like to thank our partners at Xbox, 343 Industries and Amblin Television, along with showrunner and executive producer David Wiener, his fellow executive producers, the entire cast led by Pablo Schreiber as Master Chief and the incredible crew for all their outstanding work. We wish them all the best in the future.”

343 Industries added: “We deeply appreciate the millions of fans who have driven the Halo series to global success and we remain committed to expanding the Halo universe in new ways in the future.

“We are grateful to Amblin and Paramount for their collaboration in bringing our expansive sci-fi universe to audiences around the world.”

The Halo series has had a turbulent road

The Halo series, announced in 2013, had a troubled production that stalled it until its final release in 2022.

When the series premiered, it received a moderate reception. For reference, it received a 70% approval rating from critics and a 52% rating from the public.

The biggest criticism from the general public towards the series is that despite staying in the same context of the Halo saga, it had no relation to the story of the games, feeling more like a “drama soap opera” than an epic like the one proposed by Bungie in its beginnings and later by 343 Industries with Halo Infinite.

Another of the most criticized things regarding the series was that in this story, which is part of a different universe than the video games, the Master Chief shows his face, something that has never happened in the video games.

In our review of Halo Season 2, we mentioned that “Paramount has just achieved a major milestone in video game adaptations. With a somewhat weak first season in some aspects, it managed to capture the public’s attention and with this second installment it has solidified its approach to the “Halo” saga, and finally created its own narrative.” You can read it in full through this link.
