Paramedic’s Life-Saving Act Leads to Kidney Donation: A Heartwarming Story of Friendship and Hope

As a paramedic, Kristi Hadfield has the task of saving every life and on one of her days she had to help John Cunningham in 2016, but fate had a path in store for them together, well, years later the woman from West Virginia (United States) he would donate the kidney to this man’s daughter prolonging her life.

“When he went into cardiac arrest, I remember being in the back of the ambulance and saying, ‘Not today, John, not today,’” Kristi told The Washington Post.

After this moment, both kept in touch through social networks, a practice that is common with many of their patients. So when John’s daughter Molly Jones needed a kidney, the paramedic didn’t hesitate twice to put herself in the front row as a donor.

Ready to give

The 42-year-old woman suffered from advanced kidney disease detected in January 2022, but when this disease worsened, the only salvation was a transplant: “when posting it, I suddenly received this message from Kristi,” said Molly. “I sent him a message: ‘hey, I have your kidney here,’” the paramedic recalled.

John’s daughter remembered something funny in that conversation: “he told me. ‘Listen girl, I saved your daddy and I’ll save you too.’

It’s been four months since she made the Facebook post, during which time her health only worsened: “I was trying to figure out who was going to take custody of my daughter because I didn’t think she was going to be there anymore. And Kristi says, ‘don’t give up on me. Do not give up'”.

An opportunity to continue living

Shortly after, the woman received the go-ahead to donate and what followed is that the two women met for the first time a week before the intervention: “it was fantastic to meet her”, a perception that increased after the procedure was successful: “I felt like I was alive again. The difference is just amazing. Kristi brought me back to life.”
