Skier Johannes Aigner completed his personal set of medals with silver in the combination.
Third race, third medal for Johannes Aigner and his guide Matteo Fleischmann at the XIII. Paralympics in Beijing. After gold in the downhill and bronze in the super-G, the duo completed the medal set on Monday with silver in the super combination of the visually impaired. After the third day of competition in Beijing, Austria holds one gold, three silver and one bronze medal.
“It’s unbelievable, if someone had told me a week ago that I had three medals following three competitions, I would never have believed it,” said Aigner, happy regarding his next success.
The 16-year-old from Lower Austria was second following the Super-G and was 2.18 seconds behind the Italian winner Giacomo Bertagnolli following a solid slalom. “We knew following the Super-G that it would be difficult. We definitely won silver and didn’t lose gold,” explained Aigner, who feels the strain of the last few days. “It was intense and long days. On the one hand nice, on the other hand very exhausting,” he said. Aigner therefore takes a day off before he competes for further medals in his two main disciplines, giant slalom and slalom.
In the standing class, Thomas Grochar was sixth, Nico Pajantschitsch was ninth. “It’s extremely bitter because more would have been possible,” said Grochar, who was 1.15 seconds behind on the medals.
Carina Edlinger gave up the 15 km cross-country skiing due to physical problems. Austria’s current disabled athlete of the year is therefore considering skipping the biathlon race on Tuesday. Snowboarder Rene Eckhart fails in boardercross in the quarterfinals.
