Asuncion, IP Agency.- Following the presentation of Team Paraguay, which will compete in the IV Latin American Special Olympics Games ASU 2024, the athletes are reinforcing their training to be in optimal shape for the international event that will take place in our country from October 4 to 12. Karen Cano, an SND official and ambassador of Paraguayan sport, is one of them, and is already living intensely the lead-up to the great competition.
A Special Olympics gymnast from a very young age, Karen Cano stands out in the artistic branch of the discipline and, for more than 17 years, has been representing our country in different international events, obtaining important medals in her discipline.
The athlete already has a significant number of gold and silver medals, in addition to having good results in the three Special Olympics World Championships in which she participated: Shanghai, Athens and Berlin.
Karen combines sport with art
In addition to her role as Ambassador of Paraguayan Sport, Cano is an official of the National Secretariat of Sports, working with the team of the Directorate of Management and Development of People.
Her mother, Blanca Acosta, says that she has three daughters and they all wanted to do ballet. Karen really liked the classes her sisters took and that is where her passion for the arts came from. “I found out that there was Special Olympics, so I signed her up and I was looking for the sports she liked the most, and that is when she decided on artistic gymnastics. But she also continues with dance and also plays tennis,” says Acosta.
Karen stood out in every competition in which she participated, both in the Special Olympics Paraguay Unified National Games and in the Special Olympics World Summer Games, where she has won gold medals in the following modalities: Jump, Uneven Bars, Beam and Floor.
SND Commitment
The Minister of Sports, César Ramírez, has repeatedly expressed his great support for the athletes who will compete in the largest continental event of inclusive sport.
“We are supporting the preparation of the Special Olympics Paraguay athletes who will represent us in Asunción 2024. We will have 257 athletes, 194 with intellectual disabilities and 74 unified teammates. We are with them all year round, on and off the field, driving Paraguay towards a truly inclusive country through sport,” he said.
The National Sports Secretariat in coordination with the Paraguayan Gymnastics Federation, is committed to the comprehensive training of athletes, taking advantage of the National Gymnastics Pavilion at the SND Complex, a work fully adapted to international standards and which has all the sports elements for practices.
