Paraguay will have a record wheat harvest and aims to export 100% industrialized products

Asunción, IP Agency.- This year, Paraguay plans to harvest 1.4 million tons of wheat, which will represent a record figure, according to Enrique Arrúa, vice president of the Paraguayan Chamber of Millers.

He pointed out that half of this production is destined for the local market, converted mainly into wheat flour, and that the rest is exported abroad, as unindustrialized raw material.

“The challenge is to industrialize the remaining 50% because we have the capacity to do so and export a product with added value and with a Paraguayan brand,” Arrúa said in an interview with state media.

“Our goal is to become an agro-industrial exporting country because Paraguay produces twice the wheat it consumes,” he added.

Currently, the main market for Paraguayan wheat exports is Brazil, and with the industrialization of production, the aim is to open other export windows to countries in the region.

In that sense, Arrúa pointed out that Chile is an important destination with which the Paraguayan Chamber of Millers is talking, as well as with Uruguay.

He highlighted that Chile is the second country with the highest amount of bread consumption in the world, after France, and that this makes it “an interesting market for the export of our product.”

On the other hand, he highlighted that the wheat production chain has 5,000 people that it employs directly and indirectly in Paraguay.
