Paraguay sends first load of tomatoes to Argentina and MAG seeks constant production

Asunción, IP Agency.- “Today we have the good news that Argentina granted us the phytosanitary permit to send the first loads of tomatoes,” reported the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG), Carlos Giménez. There will be 60,000 kg from producers in the department of Caaguazú.

The minister indicated that with this opportunity the aim is to keep national tomato production constant. “We need to stabilize the supply of this product,” he said in an interview with Radio Nacional.

He recalled that in the months of January and February, historical months of low production, prices fluctuated close to G. 30,000 kg. On the other hand, in recent days overproduction lowered prices to G. 4,000 per kg at the farm price.

“We want to maintain this volume and the market is the stimulus,” he indicated about the export opportunity that materializes this Friday. There will be two shipments of 30,000 kilos each and they will go to the province of Córdoba, while other exports to the province of Mendoza are negotiated.

The increase in the supply of tomatoes led the MAG to organize this Friday five simultaneous fairs for the marketing of products. He pointed out that what currently affects production is not smuggling, but rather the lack of marketing during times of higher volume.
