Paraguay is one of the three countries in the region that meet the indicators of poliomyelitis viral isolation

Asuncion, IP Agency.- Paraguay, along with Bolivia and Costa Rica, are the three countries in the region that meet the established viral isolation indicators, according to Polio Surveillance in the Americas.

The established indicator is the referral of at least 10% of positive samples of non-polio enterovirus (NPEV) in a one-year period.

Paraguay has managed to send 14% of positive NPEV samples between epidemiological weeks (EW) 33/2023 to (EW) 32/2024.

This national achievement demonstrates the professionalism of health teams, who guarantee the adequate quality and quantity of samples, as well as the safety of their storage and transportation for the diagnosis and notification of poliovirus circulation in the country.

Paraguay is among the three countries in America that meets the minimum indicator of 10% positive samples of non-polio enterovirus (NPEV), which reflects adequate sample collection and quality storage and transportation.

Poliomyelitis

Paraguay has been polio-free for over three decades, with the last case having been recorded in 1985. Better known as “polio,” polio is a highly contagious disease that primarily affects children under 5 years of age.

Most poliovirus infections do not cause symptoms, but there are cases where infected people have flu-like symptoms. Polio is a virus that can infect parts of the nervous system, causing permanent paralysis of the legs or arms. In rare cases, it can attack the parts of the brain that help with breathing, which can cause death.

The only way to prevent polio is through vaccination.

The polio vaccination schedule is as follows:

  • At 2, 4, 6 and 18 months of age, the child receives the IPV contained in the Hexavalent vaccine.
  • At age 4, receive the IPV vaccine as a booster dose.

It is important to understand that as long as there is a child infected with the virus, people with incomplete vaccination schedules are at risk of contracting polio.
