Paraguay hosts the 1st Regional Conference on Empowerment of Women in Tourism

Asunción, IP Agency.- The First Regional Conference on the Empowerment of Women in Tourism in Latin America and the Caribbean is being held from this Monday, October 21 to Tuesday, October 22, at the Bourbon Hotel Convention Center. It will bring together leaders of the tourism sector from the public and private spheres, in order to address opportunities and challenges faced by women in this field.

Organized by the National Secretariat of Tourism (SENATUR) and UN Tourism, with support from the Office of the First Lady; Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF), in order to promote female empowerment and highlight the talent of women in leadership positions, in addition to addressing the gender gap that persists in certain management levels.

The Minister of Tourism, Angie Duarte, asserted that the empowerment of women in tourism is a priority for Paraguay. We want to celebrate their contribution to the sector and continue promoting policies that promote equal opportunities for all, he said.

Although 51% of senior positions in the public tourism sector in the region are in the hands of women, there are still barriers that limit their full development, particularly in the private sector.

They highlight the work of women in the national tourism sector

Paraguay is proud to highlight the crucial role that women play in the national tourism sector, which is a key driver of economic development. In our country, 56% of tourism jobs are occupied by women, who have demonstrated their capacity and resilience in various areas of the sector.

In the accommodation sector, for example, women represent 53% of the workforce, also standing out in roles such as tourist guides, at 52%. In the business sphere, its participation in tourism agencies and wholesale operators is significant, with 55% in wholesale operators and 62% in tourism agencies.

Panel on female leadership

The conference will feature key sessions, including a High Level Panel discussing female leadership in tourism and practical workshops aimed at micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) led by women, to facilitate their access to the international market.

This Monday morning’s agenda foresees the arrival of participating delegations and from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. the ministerial meeting in the FIFA Room, 6th floor, Gran Bourbon Asunción Hotel. For 7:00 p.m., the opening cocktail is planned with the presence of international participants.

This Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., the First Regional Conference on the Empowerment of Women in Tourism in Latin America and the Caribbean will take place, which will continue from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the João Havelange Room of the Convention Center.

Later, the closing ceremony will take place, from 4:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and will end with a cocktail at the Aeronautical Museum.

This meeting represents a unique platform for the exchange of ideas and the creation of networks that will strengthen the role of women as key agents in the sustainable development of tourism, not only in Paraguay, but throughout Latin America and the Caribbean, says Senatur.
