Paraguay experiences an unusual return of cold: experts explain the reasons

Asuncion, IP Agency.- The unusual return of cold temperatures in Paraguay has generated concern among the population, accustomed to milder winters in recent years. To shed light on this phenomenon, we conducted an interview with the director of Meteorology and Hydrology of the National Directorate of Civil Aeronautics (Dinac), Eduardo Mingo.

Mingo explained that the return of cold weather is due to a neutral phase in the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon. “We normally attribute sudden changes to El Niño or La Niña, but we currently have neither of those conditions. We are in a neutral phase, which means that the sea surface temperature in the tropical Pacific is not at either extreme,” Mingo explained.

Mingo said this neutral phase has coincided with a more typical July climate 20 or 30 years ago, when it was normal to experience cold winters. “The lowest extreme temperatures have always been recorded between June, July and August, going back to the 1970s, and there was an followingshock in 2000,” the meteorologist said.

Mingo confirmed that the cold air mass comes from the south, also affecting Argentina and Uruguay. “It is a normal condition that should have always been like this, if it were not for the climatic variability that some attribute to climate change,” he explained.

As for the duration of this cold event, Mingo commented that, in the short term, low temperatures are expected to persist until Tuesday of next week. He also mentioned that the cold season is not over and that there is a possibility of La Niña becoming established, which might generate strong variability in temperature, alternating between very hot days and intense cold days that might break records.

“We can still expect cold weather for the rest of the season, although interspersed with warm days,” Mingo concluded.
