Paraguay ends dengue epidemic period with more than one hundred thousand accumulated cases

Asuncion, IP Agency.- As of this Friday, Paraguay officially enters the inter-epidemic phase of dengue, closing the 2023-2024 epidemic that lasted 44 weeks and resulted in 101,602 cases and 132 deaths, according to accumulated data, with a predominance of the DENV-2 serotype.

In the last two weeks, 97 cases of dengue have been reported, but no deaths have been confirmed during this period, the Ministry of Public Health reported.

However, surveillance of cases and control of breeding sites must continue, given that the country is endemic for dengue, which means that the virus circulates throughout the year, the health ministry said.

Public Health also details that the epidemic curve shows that in the last two weeks (SE) 27 and 28 a total of 97 cases with a diagnosis of dengue were identified, of which 64 cases were in the previous week (SE) 27, and 33 cases at the end of the last week, registering a decrease of 48%.

At this point, it is recommended that despite this epidemiological moment, it is essential to maintain constant surveillance of cases, as well as control of mosquito breeding sites, because the circulation of the virus is observed all year round.

On the other hand, it reports a 26% reduction in hospitalizations due to dengue. In the last two weeks, 54 patients were hospitalized with a diagnosis of dengue, of which 43% correspond to the pediatric group.

Timely consultation is advised

If you have fever or other symptoms of dengue, you are encouraged to seek medical attention promptly to detect the appearance of warning signs and avoid complications of the condition.

It is also recommended to continue with the actions to control and eliminate mosquito breeding sites throughout the year, as well as the use of protective barriers as repellent from 2 months of age, and the placement of mosquito nets in beds, cribs and strollers, taking into account that Paraguay is a country endemic for dengue.
