Paper packaging is growing as a sustainable alternative in e-commerce this end of the year and for 2024, according to SEE, a company specializing in packaging. This is because, according to an internal survey, of the players looking for sustainability in packaging for e-commerce, half have opted for paper, while the other half look for solutions with recycled content.

SEE, which developed bubble wrap and today has a growing portfolio of plastic and paper solutions for the e-commerce market, reveals that companies are currently diversifying packaging materials in favor of a more sustainable operation.

SEE’s Protective Packaging Marketing Manager for South America, Erika Martínez, explains that the scenario is a reflection of the movement experienced by e-commerce towards operations that contribute to a circular economy. “Undoubtedly, the search for a safer and at the same time sustainable operation is what has made retail evolve in the way it protects goods on their journey to the customer. Today in Brazil we have a paper recycling chain that is much more advanced than that of plastic, which enhances the reinsertion of this material into the production process”, she comments. According to data compiled by CEMPREthe recycling rate for plastic in Brazil is 23%, while that for paper reaches 66%.

The executive also points out that the evolution of paper as packaging does not invalidate efforts to use recycled plastic, as the market demands different categories of protection and plastic will continue to be extremely necessary. “When we talk regarding choosing the best packaging, along with the material, it is important to evaluate its resistance capacity, its impact on packaging and on the unboxing and disposal experience carried out by the customer”, she explains.

In addition to cardboard boxes, paper is present in solutions for cushioning and filling empty spaces, and also envelopes, known as mailers, which have a paper bubble system. This category of mailer eliminates the need for filling materials and can replace cardboard boxes, reducing cubage and shipping costs. “These envelopes easily serve segments such as clothing, health, beauty and electronics; all markets are hot for shopping this year-end”, comments Martinez.

Finally, the expert adds that functional paper solutions, such as envelopes, tend to favor the operational efficiency of fullfilments, and can make the operation up to three times more agile than a process with boxes, as it requires fewer procedures. “I really believe that from now on the search for paper options that optimize material and deliver high resistance and protection will grow even more. After all, this is a perfect combination to meet the demands of agility, customer experience and sustainability”, concludes Martinez.
