Moments of panic were experienced this morning in the Faculty of Humanities and Educational Sciences of the National University of La Plata (UNLP) when a prisoner from the Magdalena prison, who had been transferred to take a History exam, tried to escape and was reduced by the prison guards who had taken him to the study house and who, following calling a halt, fired twice in the air.
This was reported to THE NATION research sources. The inmate who tried to escape is a 24-year-old who is serving a sentence for robbery in Unit 35 of the Buenos Aires Penitentiary Service (SPB), in Magdalena.
“The intern began to run and managed to leave the campus of the faculty. At that moment, one of the guards called a halt, fired twice into the air and managed to abort the escape attempt,” added the sources consulted.
The spokespersons reported that the Buenos Aires Penitentiary Service (SPB) opened an internal administrative summary to determine if there were responsibilities in the escape attempt by the penitentiary agents.
“The shots fired by SPB personnel were rubber bullets. No lead shells were fired,” an investigator said.
After the incidents, the Faculty of Humanities and Educational Sciences released a press release to explain what happened and where it reported that “the trampling lasted just a few minutes and a calm situation was quickly restored on the premises.”
“The incident had to do with the attempted escape of one of the students, belonging to Unit No. 35 of Magdalena, who went to take an exam with the custody of agents of the Penitentiary Service, as is usual in our Faculty for more 15 years old. Faced with the escape attempt, those responsible for the security operation acted immediately. The actions carried out included the pursuit and capture of the student outside the premises, having also registered the display of weapons on the Faculty premises and the emission of two shots with rubber bullets. It has not yet been possible to determine exactly the precise place where the shots occurred,” it was stated in the aforementioned press release.
In addition, it was explained: “The authorities [académicas] They immediately approached those responsible for the operation, who reported that the two shots had already been fired outside the premises and that the weapons were loaded with rubber bullets. The episode lasted only a few minutes and a calm situation was quickly restored on the premises. The authorities of the Faculty agreed with those responsible for the operation and the authorities of the UNLP to continue in contact to advance an investigation into what happened, as well as to continue institutionally coordinating the actions corresponding to the implementation of the existing education programs in prisons with the measures relevant security”.
