Panevėžys will host the international photography biennial “Man and City”. Culture

“The traditional theme of the biennale – man and the city – this time has been supplemented with the sub-theme “Contexts of the present”, in order to highlight the contemporary problems and challenges that people face in the urban environment: urbanization, ecology, the effects of the pandemic, social conflicts and their impact on cities and residents,” says project manager Marija Rudokaitė-Kazlauskė.

The Biennale invited photographers to delve into the relationship between man and the city, exploring both physical and psychological connections, to reveal not only the problems of the city, but also its positive aspects – the community of the citizens, cultural vitality, innovations, urban aesthetics.

The authors of the exhibition are well-known Lithuanian and foreign photo artists. These are Lithuanians Algimantas Aleksandravičius, Ramūnas Danisevičius, Arvydas Gudas, Stasys Povilaitis, Andrius Repšys, Saulius Saladūnas, Marija Šileikaitė-Čičirkienė, Latvian photo artists Aija Bley, Reinis Hofmanis, Czech Kristýna Heiningerová, creators from Poland Agnieszka Babińska, Konrad Dobrucki, Serbian Saša Montiljo and Ukrainian artists Mariia Drozdova, Julia Kochetova.

The biennial exhibition will be accompanied by educational events. September 6 10 o’clock In the art gallery, photographer Pauliaus Vepštas will host an alternative photography workshop for students “Snapshot photography experiments”. September 6 1 p.m. Artist Aurelija Maknytė will conduct a cameraless photography workshop in the photography gallery.

September 6 4 p.m. The art gallery will host a lecture by art theorist and critic Virginijas Kinčinaitis “Photographic continuations of the city”.

Events are free. The project is financed by the Lithuanian Culture Council, Panevėžys City Municipality.
