The Malmö Arab Film Festival organized a panel session titled “Mental Health Challenges in the Film Industry” featuring Mina El Naggar, the Egyptian actress and founder of Medvest Egypt, and Louise Johansson, the Sane Cinema actress, mental health expert. and film directing, and Lebanese actress Nada Abu Farhat, who has played several complex roles in film, television and theater.
Mina Al-Najjar said he was happy to cooperate with the festival to enrich the discussion on the mental health of workers in the artistic field and discuss concerns related to the creative process and the challenges that the creative person goes through, whether he comes from pressures or problems. face the creative process in all its stages, during preparation, implementation or presentation.
He emphasized that the industry itself, unions, producers and directors have a great responsibility towards the mental health of their workers, in addition to personal responsibility towards a person’s balance and how they behaves, emphasizing that the Medvest Festival tackle many discussions on the same topic.
He added that the quality of psychological support for workers in creative industries differs from that provided to ordinary people, especially since workers in creative industries experience different pressures and problems than the average person, as they are not not exposed to the same responsibility. and difficulties. He pointed out that in the age of social media, the artist is exposed to double pressure through comments, criticism and sometimes bullying on his social media accounts.
He added that the past greatly affects a person’s present without him understanding the reason for the feeling he is feeling now, but by going back to that past and digging into it, we know what happened and the reason for this influence. It takes a lot of courage, and. this requires the understanding and experience of a psychiatrist who knows how to bring out events from the buried past.
Al-Najjar recalled what artist Salwa Muhammad Ali said during the Medvest session in Damanhour: “No one can know exactly the feelings they are experiencing at the moment, because it is not like acting. »
Lebanese actress Nada Abu Farhat said during the session that there are measures to preserve a person’s mental health, emphasizing that there are always fears regarding reporting psychological illnesses. A person can announce that they have a mental illness, but people are still afraid to talk regarding mental illness. and reveal their infection. She added that there is a guide to maintaining mental health, which is very useful.
She talked regarding the period of frustration she went through, but she didn’t reveal it even to her closest friends. She even apologized to them for appearing on a podcast with them, citing her inability to get out of bed, without explaining to them. that the problem was psychological and not a symptom.
She added: “As an actress who has made a career in the field, I see that we are exposed to pressures and difficulties, and that we face a lot of negative energy. At first, I was unable to cope with it and I was always frustrated but now, following understanding it, I decided not to let the negative energy affect me, and I became proud of being calm and composed. I understand things and I can overcome them while maintaining my psychological safety and without putting myself under the pressure I can’t bear.
During the session, Louise Johansson said that pressure and comparison between others are what workers in creative industries in the field of art suffer the most, whether they are actors or behind the camera, emphasizing that There are many workers in the field of cinema, especially documentaries. , and especially those working in the editing field, who spend long periods working with filmed content, are thought to need psychological support more than others to maintain their mental health.
Artist Bushra, who was among the audience, commented on the importance of having a psychiatrist on the set of artistic works to relieve the pressure on the actors and help them present the character’s true feelings, in addition to helping to get rid of the psychological and nervous pressure to which the actor is exposed, as he plays all the roles in his life, emphasizing that the actor on filming locations not only acts, but also always performs roles and tasks that are not his duties, so he must be a psychiatrist on the filming location.
She added: “The artist is under intense pressure in the field of work and cannot express his dissatisfaction with others or with the situations to which he is exposed. He has to absorb them and not get bored, and he has to deal with people he doesn’t know. I want to face, in addition to being exposed to the harassment of many people, whether they are workers, “with him in the same field, in journalism or elsewhere.”
