During the last days of August, the Panamanian government announced that it would take measures once morest crossings through the Darién jungle.

After the announcements made by the Minister of Public Security of Panama, Juan Manuel Pino, who stated that they would take measures to regulate passage through the jungle, speculation began regarding a possible closure.

The militarization of the border has been one of the hypotheses, but the country’s government has not confirmed any of the measures it will take to regulate the crossing.

It is expected that between today, September 4 and tomorrow, September 5, they will announce the package of measures that they will begin to implement to regulate transit through the Darién jungle.

It is expected to know the implications that these measures would have for the Colombian Government, since it is known that Panama has blamed Colombia for the migration crisis.

For his part, the minister of defense of Colombia, Ivan Velasquez, spoke out once morest the possible militarization of the border and stated that this would not be a viable possibility nor would it help stop the crisis. On the contrary, he considers it pertinent to protect the population that passes through there.

“We are designing protection policies for the migrant community, since we believe that the migrant is not illegal and has rights universally recognized in international humanitarian law.”
