Panamanian Archbishop on Day of Prayer: The Venezuelan People Are Not Alone

The Archbishop of Panama, Monsignor José Domingo Ulloa, said that “the Venezuelan people are not alone,” calling for a day of prayer for Venezuela so that in that country “the will of the people deposited in the ballot boxes is recognized and assumed by all.”

“Know, Venezuelan brothers and sisters, who are in your country and those who have chosen Panama as their home, you are not alone. We pray that truth and transparency prevail in these times of darkness and uncertainty,” Ulloa said at a mass.

The Archdiocese of Panama stated in a statement that today Ulloa is holding a Day of Prayer for Venezuela, in which he implores God that violence be replaced by peace. “May the will of the people placed in the ballot boxes be recognized and assumed by all.”

Ulloa pleaded that we should not allow Venezuelans who defend the truth to be isolated and alone, but that we should lend a shoulder so that they feel our solidarity and closeness. “Let it not be just a rhetorical gesture, but a truth that shakes and makes a difference.”

Thousands of Venezuelans in their own country and in other countries to which they have fled have demonstrated to claim the victory of opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia in the presidential elections of July 28, awarded by the Venezuelan electoral authority to Nicolás Maduro, although without presenting the records that support it, which has generated allegations of fraud.

More than a dozen people have been killed in the protests, according to non-governmental organisations, while the government has said 2,000 people have been arrested.

On Saturday, Spain, Italy, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland and Portugal signed a joint declaration calling on “the Venezuelan authorities to publish without delay all voting records in order to guarantee the full transparency and integrity of the electoral process.”

Demand of the opposition

Opposition leader María Corina Machado backed the demand that the records of the elections presented by the largest opposition coalition, the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), be verified as soon as possible, “at an international and independent level,” given that “the regime did not do so within the time limits established by law.”

Machado insisted: “The minutes of the voting witnesses in more than 80% of the tables and available at resultsconvzla.com leave no room for doubt. Edmundo González Urrutia is the president-elect of Venezuela,” despite the fact that the National Electoral Council (CNE) proclaimed Maduro the winner.

Chavismo, which also had witnesses at the polling stations but has not released the minutes, dismisses the documents presented by the opposition and does not consider them valid.
