Panama withdraws its diplomatic staff from Venezuela

Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino spoke out on Monday after the National Electoral Council announced that Nicolás Maduro had won the presidential election and made the decision to withdraw its diplomatic corps from Venezuela.

The official explained that, for the moment, diplomatic relations between the parties are “on hold” “until a complete review of the voting records is carried out.”

“The Government of Panama announces the withdrawal of diplomatic personnel from Venezuela and suspending diplomatic relations until a complete review of the minutes of the voting count by the computer system is carried out, which will allow us to know the genuine will of the people.”Mulino said at a press conference.

The president recalled how In recent years, the link between both nations has deteriorated. and clarified that his decision was made “Out of respect for the history of Panama, for the millions of Venezuelans who chose our homeland to live in, and for my democratic convictions, I cannot allow my silence to become complicity”.

To date, Venezuela did not have an ambassador in Panama nor did that country in Caracas.

For his part, the Panamanian foreign minister, Javier Martinez-Achaexplained that the suspension of relations is limited to the diplomatic area and not the consular area.

Thus, Panama joined Uruguay, Argentina, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Paraguay, Peru and Dominican Republic as part of the countries that expressed their concern about the election results.
