Panagiotis Boumis, the veteran marathon runner of the SDYP and the FAETHON Club, “left” today at the age of 84, former goalkeeper of the sports football club of Patras Achilleas.
In recent years, the deceased had suffered from pneumonia and dementia and had given up sports, staying at the Patras Asylum on Pantokratoros Street. Until the day before yesterday when his fellow athletes visited him, he seemed to be in good health. His health condition worsened and this morning he passed away. The funeral procession of his body will take place tomorrow, at 11 o’clock by I.N. Agios Athanasios Sykhainos.
The deceased found himself at the age of 16 in the football field after watching a match played by Achilles and his goalkeeper happened to be injured, so he entered his place as a substitute.
He was a staunch defender of his hometown, to the point that once, as his fellow runner, Kimonas Apostolopoulos recounts, when the opposing player kicked him in the leg to leave the goalposts unguarded, Boumis rushed in and bit his leg! An episode was created and the striker protested, but the fair referee Apostolopoulos, Kimon’s father, answered him: He did you well. And why did you kick him?

For Panagiotis Boumi, his fellow athlete Kimonas Apostolopoulos writes, quoting the photo, where he is depicted in the red shirt:
“Panagiotis Bumi, you left us alone. You left today for the big trip
We ran many marathon roads together, the classic route, in Paris, Antwerp, Prague, Istanbul, Stockholm, etc.
You opened the roads to running, I will always remember your words that when you ran in the morning the drivers of the cars coming back from the fun cheered you but your inner voice told you not to be ashamed and you kept running and you taught us the power of the soul by running in the classic route without sneakers because they were stolen from your luggage.
Good heaven. Man, popular running owes you a lot.
But the homelands are always on the sidelines for the sake of noise and image.”
