DIRECTOR of Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, Mohammad Abu Salmiya said several Palestinians in Israeli prisons died during interrogation due to torture, medical negligence and deprivation of medicines.

Abu Salmiya said he and the other Palestinians who were released left Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails. He added that the Palestinian prisoners were subjected to physical and psychological torture, and were given little food.

“Gaza prisoners lost (an average of) 25 kilograms (55 pounds) of their body weight due to lack of food,” Abu Salmiya said.

He said that Israeli doctors and nurses were also part of the attacks and punishment of Palestinian prisoners by not providing them with the necessary medical care.

“The (Israeli) doctors there beat the prisoners, the nurses beat the prisoners,” he said.

He urged international organizations concerned with prisoners’ rights to visit the prisoners and see the difficult conditions they experience in prison.

On Monday (1/7), Israel released Abu Salmiya and some 54 Palestinians, including doctors, who were detained at Al-Shifa Hospital and other medical facilities during separate military operations over the past months.

Abu Salmiya was arrested on November 23 along with several medical staff while traveling from Gaza City to the south of the enclave following an Israeli attack on the hospital.

Israel, which has ignored UN Security Council resolutions demanding an immediate ceasefire, has faced international condemnation amid ongoing brutal attacks on Gaza since an attack by Palestinian group Hamas on October 7, 2023.

At least 37,900 Palestinians have been killed, mostly women and children, and some 87,000 others injured, according to local health authorities.

More than eight months following Israel’s war, much of Gaza has been devastated by a crippling blockade of food, clean water and medicine.

Israel has been accused of genocide at the International Court of Justice, whose latest ruling ordered it to immediately halt its military operations in the southern city of Rafah, where more than a million Palestinians sought refuge from the war before it was stormed on May 6. (Ant/P-5)
