JERUSALEM (AP) — Palestinian extremists in the Gaza Strip fired dozens of rockets into Israel on Saturday, where air raid sirens sounded, in a move that raises the prospect of a new round of intense clashes.
The sound of rocket barrages cutting through the air might be heard in Gaza and sirens as far away as Tel Aviv, regarding 70 kilometers (40 miles) to the north, during the more than 30-minute attack.
Israel’s Magen David Adom rescue agency said a 70-year-old woman suffered serious injuries when a rocket hit a building in southern Israel. Elsewhere, a 20-year-old man suffered minor injuries from rocket shrapnel, she added.
So far, Israel had not responded to the attack. But Israeli military forces typically respond with airstrikes to rocket fire, raising the possibility that fighting might become more widespread. Although no one had claimed responsibility for the rocket fire, Israel usually blames the Islamic paramilitary group Hamas for any attacks coming from the Gaza Strip.
The rocket fire came following weeks of high tensions on Israel’s volatile border with Gaza, and heavy fighting in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.
Israel has maintained a blockade once morest Gaza since Hamas captured control of the territory in 2007.
The bitter enemies have fought four wars since then. Less intense clashes have also occurred between Israel and Hamas and other smaller paramilitary groups operating in Gaza.
