Palestinian refugee agency urges countries to donate $ 1.6 billion | Middle East

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) has appealed to countries for $1.6 billion in funding following its head warned of difficulties to complete. duties due to escalating costs and reduced resources.

In a statement dated January 24, UNRWA said: “Continued challenges over the past year include lack of funding, competitive global crises, inflation, supply chain disruptions, dynamic Geopolitical forces and sharp increases in poverty and unemployment among Palestinian refugees pose many difficulties for UNRWA.”

November 2022, Director UNRWA Philippe Lazzarini said financial difficulties might prevent the agency from fulfilling its mandate.

December 2022, United Nations General Assembly extended UNRWA’s mandate for another 3 years.

UNRWA was established in 1949 to provide education, health care, relief services as well as small-scale housing and financial assistance to Palestinian refugees in the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem, as well as in Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.

The agency operates mainly on voluntary donations. The UNRWA budget for 2022 is regarding 100 million USD short.
