(CNN) – The Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority, Muhammad Shtayyeh, submitted the resignation of his government to the President of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, as he announced Monday.

Shtayyeh said on his Facebook page: “I would like to inform the honorable council and our great people that I placed the government’s resignation at the disposal of Mr. President, last Tuesday, and today I submit it in writing.”

The Prime Minister of the resigned Palestinian government continued, saying: “I see that the next stage and its challenges require new governmental and political arrangements that take into account the emerging reality in the Gaza Strip, the national unity talks and the urgent need for a Palestinian-Palestinian consensus based on a national basis, broad participation, and unity of ranks. And to extend the authority of the Authority over the entire land of Palestine. For this reason, I place the resignation of the government at the disposal of Mr. President, to take what is necessary to serve our great people and the unity of their fighting forces, according to his words.

Shtayyeh added: “This decision comes in light of the political, security, and economic developments related to the aggression once morest our people in the Gaza Strip, the unprecedented escalation in the West Bank and the city of Jerusalem, and the fierce and unprecedented attack that our people, our Palestinian cause, and our political system are facing. From genocide, attempts at forced displacement, starvation in Gaza, settlement intensification, settler terrorism, repeated invasions of camps, villages, and cities in Jerusalem and the West Bank and reoccupying them, unprecedented financial strangulation as well, and attempts to liquidate the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Refugees, and disavowing all… The signed agreements, the gradual annexation of the Palestinian territories, and the effort to make the Palestinian National Authority a security administrative authority without political content,” as he put it.
