TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — A Palestinian driver rammed his vehicle into pedestrians at a busy checkpoint in the occupied West Bank on Thursday, injuring three in the latest bloodshed in the unrelenting cycle of violence rocking the region.

The incident came a day following Israeli police shot dead a 14-year-old boy who stabbed a man at a light rail station in Jerusalem, and following Palestinian insurgents detonated a bomb near an Israeli convoy that escorting Jewish worshipers to a holy site in the West Bank, wounding four soldiers.

The unrest is part of a wave of violence that began more than a year ago and has reached levels not seen in the West Bank in two decades.

Israeli paramedics said they treated three people, one of them in critical condition, following Thursday’s attack. According to Israel’s Defense Ministry, the driver fled and was detained by security guards at another nearby checkpoint. The status of him was not immediately clear.

A video that circulated on social networks showed a white truck surrounded by security personnel in the second post while shots rang out.

The checkpoint where the accident occurred is on one of the main highways that run from central Israel through the West Bank to Jerusalem and is next to the Israeli town of Modiin. The post is often crowded with passers-by and security guards or soldiers.

Palestinian attacks on Israelis and Israeli raids in the West Bank have intensified since the spring. Some 30 people have been killed in Palestinian attacks on Israelis since early 2023.
