Palestine Saudi Arabia relations, blow to Israel; Saudi Arabia is getting closer to Hamas in Palestine – saudis said set to host top hamas delegation

Riyadh: Israel’s desire to reach a cooperation agreement with Saudi Arabia has suffered a setback. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had announced that he would establish good relations with Saudi Arabia and had taken steps towards it, but reports say that the new friendship with Iran has turned things upside down.

Various Arabic media reported that Saudi Arabia has decided to host a senior delegation of the Palestinian organization Hamas, which Israel considers a terrorist organization. A high-level delegation is visiting Saudi Arabia, including Hamas Politburo Chief Ismail Haniya, Deputy Chief Salih al-Aruri, and Hamas Leader Abroad Khaled Mishal. There are also reports that the delegation will arrive in Mecca for pilgrimage.

The new decision by Saudi Arabia, which has been distancing itself from Hamas for several years, has reportedly disappointed Israel. Saudi Arabia has previously arrested and imprisoned several people linked to Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip and openly calls for war against Israel. But Saudi’s new decision to cooperate with Iran and China has led to changes in their approach to the Palestinian Authority.

Saudi leaders have blamed Hamas for the failure of reconciliation efforts with the Palestinian Authority, led by Mahmoud Abbas. Then Saudi Arabia took strong measures against Hamas supporters in Saudi Arabia. In 2019, Saudi police arrested and jailed several people linked to Hamas, citing threats to the country’s governance. But in the past few months, there have been attempts by Hamas to get closer to Riyadh, according to media reports. Saudi Arabia has released several prisoners, including senior Hamas member Muhammad al-Qudari, who was in a Saudi prison after Hamas leaders sent messages that they wanted to restore relations with Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia, which has been making efforts to establish good relations with Israel for some time, has reportedly backed away from that move due to recent Israeli violence in the West Bank and its attacks on the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Benjamin Netanyahu, who was reinstated as Prime Minister, announced that signing the Abraham Accords with Saudi Arabia would be a priority. But Saudi Arabia has been reluctant to go ahead with the deal publicly because of rising Israeli-Palestinian tensions. With this, the US-brokered move to schedule direct flights from Tel Aviv to Mecca to allow Muslim citizens of Israel to easily participate in the holy Hajj pilgrimage is also in jeopardy.
