Palestine: Every time the world pushes for a ceasefire, “Israel responds with a massacre”

New York – Palestine’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Riyad Mansour, stressed that “every time the world pushes for a ceasefire, Israel responds with a massacre.”

This came in his speech during a Security Council session on Wednesday evening, held to discuss the situation in the Middle East.

“It is no coincidence that every time the world pushes for a ceasefire, Israel responds with a massacre like the one at the (followers) school,” Mansour added. “It is sending an even uglier message than before: it will not stop.”

He continued: “While we welcome the international consensus calling for an immediate ceasefire, it is clear that Israel is using its veto power to deal with this prospect. This must end. Israel cannot continue to defy the world.”

He added: “As we meet here for the tenth consecutive month, Israel continues to claim lives and do everything possible to spread the flames of conflict in the Middle East.”

He stated that Israel is tearing up the Geneva Conventions in Gaza, “with its tearing up of every rule established in the humanitarian field. Israel does not care about your condemnations, ignores your decisions, and does not even listen to your discussions.”

The Palestinian delegate added: “You as countries and the Security Council bear responsibility. Israel is a rogue state because of the impunity it has enjoyed.”

Addressing the council members, he said: “You have the tools to transform what you decide into reality, and no one should be above the law, if you choose and there is the political will to implement what you decide.”

Mansour pointed out that Palestine “will head to the United Nations General Assembly in the coming days to ensure that it is fulfilling its responsibility under its charter, and to ensure that the decisions of the highest court in the world, the International Court of Justice, are translated into political will, momentum and tangible measures implemented by the United Nations and its member states, to end these acts as soon as possible.”

With American support, Israel has been waging a devastating war on Gaza since October 7, 2023, leaving more than 132,000 Palestinians dead and wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 10,000 missing, amid massive destruction and deadly famine.

In contempt of the international community, Tel Aviv continues the war, ignoring the UN Security Council resolution to stop it immediately, and the International Court of Justice’s orders to take measures to prevent acts of genocide and to improve the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza.
