One city, one silhouette. When someone is so attached to a place as Leoluca Orlando is to Palermo, then one speaks of incarnation, of embodiment. Orlando was mayor of the Sicilian capital for 22 years, five mandates spread over 37 years, and even if he was away for a few years in between: Orlando was always there, a cigar between the index and middle finger. “I was the daddy of this town,” he told the magazine a week ago Friday. “And as it is with fathers, things don’t always go well, but they are always there.” Orlando is now 74 years old, his things in the Palazzo delle Aquile have long been packed.
