After two albums, the Swedes are considered by PALANTIR as a power metal hope, who seem to have found their dream a good year and a half since their last work “Chasing A Dream”, but it probably didn’t go according to their expectations, which is why a follow-up EP is now being released with “Nightmare Opus”. And the gentlemen continue where they left off with the last output.
Fast, melodic power metal from friends of STRATOVARIUS or DREAMTALE should be popular, paired with memorable vocal lines from frontman Marcus S. Olkerud, who often goes by none other than Michael Kiske (HELLOWEEN) of the early days. That’s fitting, as this part was released exactly on Halloween.
With “A Distant Past” the up-and-coming power metallers play their cards confidently following a skillful intro that is also reminiscent of the debut of the aforementioned Pumpkin Heads. Catchy keys, up-tempo rhythms, sing-along vocals and a happy atmosphere characterize this instant anthem. Equipped with a lot of gimmicks, the Swedes know how to operate in the genre and take advantage of this experience. “Sailing On” ups the ante and falls into the same vein, while the title track is a bit more epic with galloping beats.
The 25-minute release is rounded off by “Griftkväde,” performed in Swedish, an acoustic version of “Escaping Reality,” from the 2017 debut, and the crazy final track “Lost Between Pixels,” which, true to its name, is an entertaining 8-minute long 80-second track. Bit sounds has to offer.
And even if jack-of-all-trades Ced Forsberg (ROCK ROLL, BLAZON STONE, CLOVEN ALTAR, RUNELORD) left the band following only two years, he contributed some backing, while ex-guitarist Calle Persson added a few guitar tracks.
Anyone who liked PALANTÍR’s first two albums will be able to pick up “Nightmare Opus” without hesitation. The still young band continues to deliver strong happy-power metal fare with lots of details and catchy hit candidates. The anticipation is building for the third album, which will hopefully be released soon.
