“Pakistan’s Supreme Court Orders Release of Former Prime Minister Imran Khan: Latest Updates, Protests and Corruption Charges”

Pakistan’s Supreme Court has ordered the immediate release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan from custody. The court declared illegal the arrest of the politician in a corruption case and ordered Mr. Khan to appear on May 12 before the High Court of Islamabad, which ruled on the arrest of the ex-premier, the TV channel reports. Geo TV. Against the backdrop of the detention of a politician in the country, mass protests have been taking place for several days.

It is specified that the judges of the Supreme Court decided not to let Imran Khan go home, but sent him for a day to the guest room of the police station in Islamabad, following which he will once more appear before the capital’s court. The Supreme Court allowed Mr. Khan to meet with 10 people at the station, including his family, friends and lawyers, the TV channel reported. According to Geo TV, the court recommended the ex-premier to start a dialogue with his political opponents, which should lead to peace in society.

On May 9, Imran Khan was detained by the police on charges of corruption. Imran Khan and his wife are accused of corruption and using the Al-Qadeer Trust family foundation to steal 50 billion Pakistani rupees (regarding $175 million) from the state budget during the creation of Al-Qadeer University.

The next day, an Islamabad court arrested Mr. Khan for eight days. After that, mass protests began in Pakistan. According to the portal Dawn, as a result of protests in different regions of the country, more than 1 thousand people were detained. Media also report four dead and dozens injured in Peshawar. In Peshawar, protesters attacked Pakistan’s state media buildings, and in Lahore, they attacked a police station. They demand a meeting with Master Khan. According to Geo citing the Telecommunications Authority of Pakistan, they suspended the provision of Internet services throughout the country for an indefinite period.

Imran Khan was the Prime Minister of Pakistan from 2018–2022. In April 2022, he received a vote of no confidence. In October, Mr. Khan was removed from the election and stripped of his right to hold government office for five years. He was due to appear before the court following regular absenteeism. In March, police filed terrorism charges once morest him and 17 others.
