Pakistani Taliban kill 2 policemen in attack in Peshawar

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — The Pakistani Taliban shot dead two police officers and wounded two others in an armed attack on a highway checkpoint in the city of Peshawar, police said Thursday, in the latest episode. of violence in the troubled north-western region bordering Afghanistan.

The attack happened overnight in the Regi Model Town neighborhood, police chief Arshad Khan said. Authorities launched an operation to try to locate and arrest the assailants, who fled in the dark, he added.

The outlawed group Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, or TTP, claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement.

The incident came two days following a suicide car bomber wounded six soldiers and two civilians in an attack on a truck carrying security forces in Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The Pakistani Taliban is an independent group but allied to the Afghan Taliban. He has been emboldened since the Taliban came to power in the neighboring country in August 2021 coinciding with the last phases of the withdrawal of US and NATO troops following 20 years of war.
