KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) — At least seven people died in a fire in a passenger train car moving overnight in southern Pakistan, authorities said Thursday.
The convoy caught fire in Khairpur, a district regarding 500 kilometers (300 miles) north of Karachi, the capital of Sindh province, said Mohsin Sial, a railway official. Six people were killed in the fire and a woman died following jumping out of the window of the moving train, he added.
The flames also caused extensive damage to other carriages, he said, noting the cause of the incident was not immediately clear.
Images broadcast on television showed several sections of the train burned. At the time of the incident, the convoy was traveling from Karachi to the eastern city of Lahore. According to local media reports, the flames advanced through the train on Wednesday night, engulfing several carriages.
In Pakistan, poor passengers often bring their own gas stoves for cooking on board even though regulations prohibit this. On crowded trains, safety regulations are often ignored.
The railway accidents that occur in the country are usually the result of poor railway infrastructure and the negligence of the authorities. In 2019, at least 74 passengers were killed and dozens more injured in a fire sparked by a gas burner explosion on a convoy in the eastern Punjab province.
